Guide to Home Security During Summer
May 9, 2018 12:00 pmSummer is almost here! You’ve probably already booked your vacations. You also know that you’ll be away from home more, attending the kids’ sporting events, or just enjoying time outside doing summer activities. And with the onset of summer comes potential threats to home security. So, how can you protect your home while also enjoying all that summer has to offer? Let’s take a look:
Security for Your Doors & Windows in the Home
In the northern hemisphere, summer most certainly means one thing: it’s going to be hot! Thus, many homeowners open windows and doors to air out the house with a nice breeze. Even so, we are forgetful creatures, so we will often subconsciously leave these open when we go out for our own comfort when we eventually return. Although it’s tough trying to teach an old dog new tricks, try to remember to close and lock your doors and windows before leaving the house. Trust us when we say that you’d rather come back to a hot house than a ransacked one.
Clean Up the Yard and Put Valuables Away
As the weather warms up, it’s time to break out the toys, whether they be the kids’ bikes, scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, etc., or the adults’ gas grills and lawn furniture. Kids can be careless and forgetful in their ways and leave their gear on the front lawn or in the backyard. Adults are a little more understandable leaving their stuff “laying around”, but both pose the same threat: theft. Our advice? Have your kids store their stuff in the garage when not in use. Cover your gas grill after dinner so it can cool down and, if you have a fence around your property, properly secure it when you’re the last to leave in the morning and at night. When going on vacations, be sure to lock all valuables, appliances, lawn items, and toys in the garage.
Garage Safety & Security
Speaking of garages, be sure to close and lock it whenever you step away. Summer can mean yard work, such as mowing the lawn or trimming the weeds, which also means expensive power tools live in your garage. If you foolishly leave it open, you’re just inviting thieves to steal your expensive equipment. It may be annoying having to reopen your garage every time you go back there, but it’s better than losing all your lawn care tools to some lowly thief.
