5 New Year’s Home & Business Security Resolutions 

As 2022 quickly comes to a close, many people consider making resolutions to better their personal lives such as going to the gym more often, eating better, paying off those credit cards, or promising to go to bed earlier each night. #1 Strengthen Your Security 

Whether you run a business or own a home, security is more important than ever. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice, 66% of burglaries affect residential properties while 34% of the burglaries that happen each year affect small businesses. 

More specifically for homeowners, the statistics are frightening. The FBI reports that “a break-in occurs every 26 seconds at an average cost of around $2,800 to the homeowner.”

To avoid becoming one of these statistics, it is advised to strengthen your home or business security with 24/7 monitored alarm systems. 

#2 Set the Alarm 

It’s not enough to have an alarm system, it needs to be actually set.

The true effectiveness of the alarm system lies in the ability of the user to set the alarm at times when they feel it is needed such as when no one is home, when the family is home but in bed, or when away on vacations. Some homeowners set their door alarms when they are home and want to be alerted to anyone entering the property. 

#3 Change the Smoke Detector and CO Detector Batteries 

A smart idea for your security resolutions should be to change the batteries to both your smoke detectors and CO monitoring system. Too many homeowners forget to do this regularly. The start of the new year is a great chance to change out those batteries and test the alarms. 

#4 Stop Hiding Your House Key 

Gone are the days that we can keep our doors unlocked and so too are the days of hiding a key outside, say under your doormat. Physical keys are easy to copy and lose track of depending on how many people need access to it.

What’s better than not hiding your key on your property? Changing your home over to a keyless entry where a code is needed and can be changed at regular intervals. 

#5 Stop Going Public With Your Plans

Make this year the one when you stop announcing every weekend plan and vacation you are headed out upon on social media. Friends of friends could easily discover your plans and use them as a chance to burglarize your home or business. Instead of announcing your plans in advance, post pictures after your trip has ended and you have arrived home.
